My friends engine in his gts is extremely fucked and hes trying to figure out what to do and i mentioned doing a swap to a better motor... is it possible to swap a 1jz engine into a celica even though rear wheel?

Thumbs up

Anything is possible with enough CA$H. The 3sgte would be just about as good. I think it would be hot to swap the 1jz though. If you did a driveline conversion you could have the first ever 5th gen RWD. That would be hell@ sweet. If you got the green I say go for it. If not look into a 3sgte... that's what every other person will probably tell you.
