Changes in years matter for tuners?

I am car shopping and the GN 84-87 is on the top 3 picks I have. Being rare and not many up for sale in my area i'm wondering if the older Hot Airs would be worse platform to start?

I do plan on modding this car somewhat and keeping it a DD *not in winter though*

I do think I kind of think the 85s are nicest looking outside too. If the platform is a good enough starting point what should I get to make it just as good as the latter I/C exhaust brands?

If I were to get a GN, I'd get one of the later ones with the I/C. It's just one less things to do down the road...which you're GUNNA need...running high boost without an I/C is a death sentence...this is no news flash.

VTEC = Virtually Torqueless Economy Car...my 01 Prelude would have said differently...R.I.P...

84 Hot Air Fuel injetion. 85 Hot Air Fuel Injection ~I think 200 hp... I should know I did have an 84

86 Intercooled Fuel Injected. 87 Intercooled Fuel Injection ~245 hp.

I had an 84 and an 86. The 86 is much better in the power deparment.

You want an 86 and up.

You are deffinatly going to want to go with an 86-87 car. the intercooler and better placement of the turbocharger are worth it in the long run.

Plus there is more of an aftermarket for them. stretched IC's blah blah blah.

I'm still digging around not many people want to give them up for a price I can swing!

also wasn't in the FAQ what ones had speedos higher then 85 i've seen them before and think it was stock

oh and Z its just a wee joke i have a GSR in my little hatchy that scoots along pretty well

LOL they all had the 85 MPH speedo. You can buy a kit to convert it to 140 MPH speedo.LOL

One of the things us GN guys are plauged with.

I never got that...why did the GM/ford guys used to give their cars such low ranging speedos? Buddy of mine used to have some old LX, 4 banger mustang. It only had a speedo that went to...like...90, I think, but would easily pin it. Never made sense...why not make a speedo that will at least be useful? After all...these are sporty cars.

It was some 1980's weird attempt to increase fuel economy and keep people at the 55 mph speed limit on the highway. By going 55 mph on a 85 mph scale, it looks like you are going pretty fast.....

Didnt last but a couple of years.

I figured it was something like that, but that's still a kinda stupid way to try to get people to not speed. People just went really fast, but didn't know HOW fast...oh well.

Once you went above 85, it was all the same anyway right ?

It was a federal regulation that limited speedos to 85mph, luckily that was canned afterawhile.

84/85 gn vs 86/87 gn is a no brainer even if the 84/85 is alot cheaper, which it should be anyway. On top of what Andy said:

The block was improved and made stronger.
Better intake manifold set up, headers, turbocharger, down pipe, 20 bolt oil pan vs 14 bolt, and even more than that. I can't give a better list because the 84/85's just didn't even interest me enough to research them much. If your looking for a good platform to build a performance car out of then go straight into an 86/87 and never look back. Not all GN's or T-Types go for big money, but if its really nice then it will be pricey.

I'd take my time and collect some more bank and go with 86 or 87 because in the long run it will cost you twice as much to get the 84s or 85s to run as fast with any level of reliability.The longer you look you'd be suprised at what you will come across in your price range.given 15 years I have been able to find 2 nice 87s.The first within only a year of searching!!!The second took some time because I wasn't looking that hard.

definatly go 86 or 87.my brother is sellin an 86 t type and will probably let it go pretty cheap. the t types are as good as gns but are cheaper. i unfortunatly MAY be selling my 87 gn. im doing everything in my power to avoid it, but i may be forced to. what are you looking to spend? his ttyype is cosmeticly almost perfect. but motor and trans are pretty stock. my gn is heavily moded, but needs cosmetic work. we both put WAY more money into the cars than we will likely get back. let me know, il give you any info you need. again he IS selling, and i MIGHT be selling
