After reading some postings on here about peoples tranmission problems, and how they replaced them over and over. I decided to go with one posting about changing the TCM (transmission control module).

I am having problems with my transmission like everyone esle. My tranny will drop into a lower gear without warning when driving. But after you shut if off it will sometimes reset itself and go back to normal, but only for a bit. So this has to a computer problem possibility?

On June 29th, 2005, I purchased a second hand TCM and replaced my other one--I actually got two TCM's--The first one didn't work, because it wouldn't start my van, so I took the first one back and got and exchange for another.

The second one worked, and my van started. I took it out for a small drive and hand no problems with the tranny dropping into a lower gear. I took it to work and back the same day and came back at night, no problems yet.

Possibly it's computer related. I'm hoping the TCM resolves the problem after all with the "transmission."

The TCM wasn't too hard to change on my 1994 van. The TCM is found in the engine compartment. It's on the right fender well. Under the the fuse box, and to the right of the battery. It's black, and long.

To remove it, you need to loosen up a few bolts, screws, and hoses. Once you try to start and remove you'll see what parts need to be loosened to remove it. The TCM itself is held on by two long screws.

The tools I used where a 10mm socket and I believe a 5/16 socket to get at everything, this included a ratchet. I did get one small cut, but when you work in tight situations, what do you expect.

Back to the same ole routine the tranny is.

Possibly the used part I bought had the same problem.

One auto wrecker told me those trannies were crap.

Now, should I try and locate another TCM, is so would I take it from a smashed up van?

sorry to hear about your tranny but dont feel bad mine is a 97 voyager and was having tranny problems after my radiator blew and mixed the anti freeze with tranny fluid so just had my tranny rebuilt cost me $1800 couldnt find a used one around here. Hope all works out for you good luck. FrankC
