1990 740 GLE rough and bad fuel economy - help!

Had my '90 740 GLE serviced - new distributor and spark plugs, wires. also needed the air mass flow meter replaced. They also cleaned out the pcv (or the volvo equivalent of it). I had replaced the air filter. Got it back from mechanic - a private but well recommended shop - now runs VERY rough, with idle wanting to head down toward 600 or so, stalls frequently and gets very, very bad gas mileage. I'd guestimate under 10 mpg. Runs pretty good on highway, except for economy. Also, shifts late and harder than usual.

As I am very short of cash for the next month, I'd like to know what I can do or check out, and only go back to the mechanic if I have some idea of what I may be getting into.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1990 740 GLE rough and bad fuel economy - help!

I just had the same problem with my 1986 740 - I kept looking then I finally found that my idle control hose that comes off the intake manifold had a hole in it - it was a dealer part that cost me about $16 - If I was you I would check that to see if it has a hole it - I was so amazed - it idles wonderful and my gas mileage is sooo much better! I hope this helps! Suzanne
