Unhappy autom transm doesnīt get into gear

Yesterday it happend to me on my Camaro 3.8l (2000) that a heard a very ugly noise during enginestart. It sounded like the noise a starter makes when you try to start while the engine is running. After that there was now power reaching the wheels anymore. Donīt matter in with position the shifter was.
Before that has happend a heard some sort of pumping noise when the engine was running.

Itīs an Automatic transmission with about 60000 miles on the clock.

Another thing that was a bit strange: in the last time the car shifted very hard, aspecially after long and fast trips.

The fluid level was ok iīve checked it 2 days before the incident

Do you guys have any idea whatīs the problem?

cheers

The garage said that the pump from the torque converter is fuct and so they have to change the hole transmission

Could it be that the hole transmission gets scrapped because of a failure from the torque converter?

For me this sounds after a bit of a fraud. Like throw the engine away because the sprak plugs are worn.

By the way that "little" repair would cost around 4200 $ in that garage because they said itīs not possible to get an exchange transmission for the 3,8 camaro and so the have to order a new one from GM ( I live in Austria, Europe and the camaro is very rarely driven over hire).

does anyone now the stall speed of the original torque converter for the ML60E transmission of the 3.8 L Camaro. Because iīm thinking about to install one with lower stall to reduce the slip on long and fast ( above 100mph) Highway trips and keep the oil cooler. Today a head a look on the transmission and the oil. The oil was borned and dark and there were so bits of the oil pump laying at the inputdriveshaft on the transmission. Seems that the "sportscar" Camaro canīt take high speeds.

What iīm wondering about is: How often does the pump or converter fails on the V( models because the have the same on installed? When the one on my V6 doesnīt last for 70000 miles

Re: autom transm doesnīt get into gear

well, i think the factory stall is around 1600, i wouldnt go any lower than that. I also ask how well they have been taken care of. A proporly serviced transmission would be able to handle the 100+mph stints without problem. my third gen camaro with 150,000 miles would run 110 without complaining and no parts failures, but thats because i do routine mantanaince on it schedules trans services and such. Also if you have an auto and drive it like a manual, aggressivly beating it around, it will fail, it wasnt designed for that. factory clutch packs will wear out and youll see similar problems to what your facing. it sounds to me like your due for an overhaul and rebuild of the transmission. while your at it you should probly upgrade to a high performance setup from B&M, its called a transkit and its definatly worth the money.

Yes iīm looking aroud for some remanufactured transmissions and make a couch table out of the old one.

I now sitting nearly the hole day in front of the pc looking for proper ones.

I got a good offer from roadmaster transmissions who give a 24 month/ 24 k quaranty for there transmissions.

Itīs about 2000 $ for a remanufactured, Heavy Duty, with oil cooler& converter plus shipping to austria.

Does anyone has experiances with transmissions from them or does someone recommend some other shops?

Re: autom transm doesnīt get into gear

hmmmm, sounds like a good price for what you are buying, but it might be cheaper to have the one you already have rebuilt. if you can pull and install it yourself, and have the shop rebuild it with parts you provide, it shouldnt cost all that much. maybe a few hours labor. the transkit for my tranny was around 400 bucks, add a few hours labor at 85 bucks per hour, and your still lookin at alot less than a completely new unit.
