Re: clicking when brakes are pressed

It could be a sticking caliper. The caliper slides may need to have brake grease applied to them so that the caliper moves freely. This should eliminate the problem. Also a little on the mounting bolts won't hurt either. Just make sure that you use brake grease!

I have a 1994 Grand Am and am having a similar problem. About a monght ago I got a complete brake job (front and rear). About a week later I noticed a clicking. When I put pressure on the brakes, there is a clicking noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear brakes. My neighbor thought it was the parking brake that was loose, but he fixed that and it didn't help. If anything it made the clicking worse. Did GTP's advise help? Would that apply to the rear brakes?

Re: clicking when brakes are pressed

If you have disc brakes on the rear it would apply. However, if you have drum brakes you will need to remove the drums and lubricate, with anti-seize compound or high temp brake grease the area where the shoe rubs against the backing plate. It will click sometimes when the shoe moves.

As for the first problem, my Escort was clicking badly in the front. Removed the caliper bolts and lubricated the bolts and slides worked like a charm. This will work on any disc brake if it making a noise.

Good Luck!

Re: clicking when brakes are pressed

Just to make things clear from GTPDad's last post about the rear shoes...For those not familar with the rear brake set up...when he states to lube the brake shoes at the backing plate...lube where the sides of the shoes meet the back plate before the drum is re-installed, do not put lube on the pads of the shoes that meet the drum.

GTPDad...I just wanted to make things clear for the guys/gals that may not do brakes that often. I would hate to see a miss interpretion.

No intention to step on your instructions I get concerned when people work on brakes...too important to have someone miss-read you directions.

No problem Dan, sometimes I assume that folks know what I am talking about and don't fully explain myself.
