How would you do this????

OK guys and gals here's the deal. I have a goal. My goal is to use a 77-90 b-body of some sort to start with.

After that the goals for the car are:

1 - The car must be able to carry four adults comfortably.

2 - The car must get at a minimum 20MPG while cruising at 70mph

3 - The car must be capable of sub 14 second 1/4 mile times.

Now the question is this. How would you go about trying to reach these goals?

Well, the b-body can definitely carry four passengers comfortable..I would start with a Gm crate engine something like the ZZ4 with a 700R4 trans and maybe a 3:42 or 3:73 gear to get all that mass in motion. I don't know if that would put you in the fourteens but it will be a lot of fun to drive.

Re: How would you do this????

The ZZ4 would do the speed trick.

But I don't think it would allow the MPG requirement.

try something like a lt1 then, just find a old cop car and yank the motor and tranny, rebuild the lt1 with some better parts(aluminum heads ), do the tranny, and the efi will help in gas, and you can tweak the computer to get more power

An LT1 (or L99 for that matter) won't adapt easily into 77-90 b-body.
To do that would require replacing the radiator, radiator mounts, pcm (with new programming) as well as many other items.

The radiator would have to be replaced because an LT1 is a reverse-flow coolant engine -considerably different from an L05 or L03.
For those years of b-body, it'd be a lot easier to build a decent L05 or pehaps even a 455.
A 455 could conceivably get 20 mpg... and would likely break into the 14's without a lot of work.

Re: How would you do this????

No one said this would be easy. The LT1 swap has been done many times. I've seen several.

Again the 455 would do the 1/4 mile times, but getting 20mpg out of it as well would be difficult. Unless one were to adapt some sort of EFI to it... Hmm... Maybe a mild 454, would bolt in easy too, running a Megasquirt EFI control... Hmmmm...

Re: How would you do this????

well from my experience these cars even with the LG4 will haul jsut fine when fully loaded although caddy and olds got carried away and used 403s and 425s and 455s and 500s and such, but they are overadvanced low rpm lw end torque producing engines, chevy engines are not, but in these cars they do damned good, evne with crap 2.73 and 3/08 gears,

its crazy, but good

and these get 20+ mpg with LG4 and 700r4 i know for a fact over 20mpg if all in good shape and maintained correctly
