exhaust questions

so i realized that buying a cat-back exhaust from some company is a rip off...so i was thinking of just buying like a n1 muffler, and going to a muffler shop and having them do the piping from the cat to the muffler..
i have a couple of questions...how do i know what size to get?..like here:
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/hopup1/an1counmu608.html
would i get the 60mm or the 80mm?
also..should i go with 2.25" piping...or 2.5"?

and one more question...my dad has a decent knowledge of cars, and he says he could borrow his friend's welder...hes never welded before, but he thinks he can do the piping himself...how hard is it to do this yourself?

-thanks for any help

Re: exhaust questions

if your new to welding, it will not be so easy. practice makes perfect. if it doesnt rust easily, then, thats the material you will want to go with. another way of doing it is, buy all the flanges, piping, and muffler. piece and chop the piping you need. take it all to the exhaust shop and have it welded on.

imagine piecing intercooler piping together. price of piping depends on quality.

Re: Re: exhaust questions

yeah... i would just order the tip you want or muffler... whatever you wanna call it and then go to the shop and have them custom make the rest of your piping... i dont know if i would have your dad do it or not, you dont wanna end up having any leaks or anything, plus if he welds too much.. the welds will break through the piping or the muffler... not good!

Re: exhaust questions

its the size of the piping going into the end of the muffler... like the end comming out is 115mm... im not sure one the sizes...like in inches... but its probably a 1 inch difference or so.. its probably like a 2inch and a 3inch inlet.. i would get teh 80mm inlet and use 2 1/2 inch piping from the cat back... they can use and adapter piece to make the muffler fit

so the 60mm and 80mm is just the size of the pipe behind the muffler that would be connecting to the pipes coming from the cat?

Re: exhaust questions

.0394inches = 1mm

so

60mm = 2.3622 inches

the 60mm or 80mm stated in the ad says it is the inlet. which part of the muffler do you think is the inlet

80mm = 3.1496 inches

Re: exhaust questions

*edit*
could i do the 80mm inlet with 115mm tip...and would i still be able to connect the 2.5" piping to the inlet?...or would i need to get the 60mm inlet?

Re: exhaust questions

just get the 60mm. why?..................because you are using 2.5 piping to begin with. is there a reasoning why you want to get the 80mm over the 60mm?

Re: exhaust questions

eh..the only reason is for looks...the 60mm inlet comes with a 90mm tip, and the 80mm inlet comes with a 115mm tip...would it be too much of a hassle to get the bigger one?

probably not... youll just need to take it to your local muffler shop and have them install it because with the adapts.. you wanna make sure its not gonna leak... if you want the big tip... get the 80mm... everything will be just fine
