ignition coils

last night ii had some sputtering problems with my car. took it to be scanned and had a p0300 code which is a random/ multiple misfire so the mechanic said i need new coils and a new module. i asked if it was just take off and replace but he said i the computer might spike so i agreed reluctantly to let him do it. i was just wondering if it is as difficult as he said it was or is it just take off and replace?
btw 99 gp gt 48,000 + miles

Re: ignition coils

the ignition module and coils take one screw to remove the electrical connection and bolt on with 6 bolts. Two per coil. All three coils can be removed and replaced in about 30 minutes. Personally I think you are getting hosed. Multiple misfires are related more to plugs and wires than they are to coils especially with only 48k miles. Always change the plugs and wires first and then replace the coils if the misfires don't go away.

Re: ignition coils

I agree 100% with GTP. you're getting hosed. Plugs and wires first, they are normal maintenance parts, although 48k is pretty soon to need them. I have never heard anyone say that the computer might spike, that's absurd. One other thing to check, have you noticed you're coolant getting low. Upper intake failures are relatively common and will cause coolant to get sucked into the combustion chamber causing a misfire. Again, it seems a little early at only 48k, but it's another thing to check.
