How many miles you got? I had a very similar experience at 58,000, the lower intake manifold gasket went, fortunately it was covered (well mostly) under warranty. I was down 3 quarts or more before the low oil light came on, but no serious after effects. I now have well over 100,000 miles, and no engine noises. I would definitly ask the shop to look into this if you still have warranty! From what I've seen on the 'net, this problem is pretty common. (PS When I checked the stick that day, there was NO oil on mine!)

Re: checked oil the other day

your car isnt going to lock up if your only a quart low.

Low oil lights dont come on untill it is too late to know (usually around 3 PSI) so your light wolnt come on unless you drained about 2.8 more quarts.

Best thing I like about used vehicles is knowing all the kinks have been worked out by the poor sap before you.

On another note, A friend of mine had a '95 bonneville with the 3.8 that died an early death from a combination of coolant and oil leaks.
