camaro stalling

i recently bought a 94 Z28 with a little over 130k on it. Ocasionally under throttle (any throttle) it stalls then sputters and dies. It doesn't matter what kind of throttle it is under or if i floor it while this is happening. I originally thought that it was the fuel filter as before i bought iti the fuel level was allowed to get very low and it had been sitting for a while. Changing the fuel filter did not in any way shape or form seem to affect this. in fact now it seems to happen less often but with more severity. last time it was over an hour before the motor would catch again. This is completely intermiten as i took it to a local mechanic and the car won't die, sputter, or even stumble for him even when he drives it. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd keep tooling the fuel system, check the pressure out, my guess would be the pump going bad, any excessive whining from it?

I agree it does sound like your fuel pump.

THANKS GUYS By the way does anyone make a HI-PO fuel pump for these cars. I know holley made one for up to 93 but has discontinued it. and edelbrock makes one for up to 92.

Dont know, i'd look around on some sites like www.thunderracing.com or so, but also if I were you i'd just get another stock pump.

optispark...... your opti has gon kaput. check under your water pump for evidence of water seepage. if its there i can guarantee you need a new optispark. dont buy the dealership one, go to www.gmpartsdirect.com, its bout 300 bucks cheaper for the same part. trust me i worked at a dealership, only reason i bought parts from the parts counter was i got an employee discount.

i put a new fuel pump in it and that seems to have fixed it

is there a panel that can be removed from within the car to access the gas tank? Id like to replace the sender for my gas guage but i cringe at the thought of dropping my rear end and my gas tank to get to it.

lol, at that rate he will need more then a sending unit... need a whole new tank

not really we did that at work once or twice, kinda behind the counter stuff. the owner didnt want to pay for the labor to remove all the rear end stuff, so we kind said well there is another option......

and a few times they went for it. you cut a small hole first approximately where the sending unit is, make sure your in the right spot, and then cut a hole large enough to get the sender out. im not a welder, so wed have the body shop weld the peice back in so that it was water tight again. and put the carpet back in place, and sent them on their way.

lol, what if you just get a peice of sheet metal just a lil bigger then the hole and use somesort of rubber seal and just 'place' the top on the hole this way you can get to the unit later if it goes again.?

These cars are a unibody design, you weaken the overall structure when you cut a hole in it like that and don't weld/rivet a repair piece back in.
