Question BOVs and Wastegates

when i look at turbo parts online, something tells me that BOVs and wastegates are the same thing. can anyone give me a little info about each one, where they are located and what they do? thank you

Re: BOVs and Wastegates

At least lie to me and say you searched but didn't find anything.

blow off valve is in the upper intercooler pipe near the throttle body elbow. it releases boost pressure when the throttle plate closes (when you let off the gas or shift) so that the pressure doesn't hurt the turbo.

wastegate is a valve, mounted in the turbo (internal gate) or on the o2 housing or exhaust manifold (external gate) so that when a certain pressure is reached at it's vacuum source (from boost controller), it opens a valve to redirect exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel, in turn stopping the force that spools up the turbo, and limits the boost of the turbo.

There is a sweet sticky on this topic at www.racingknowledge.org, DSM section, stickied at the top of the topics list. Not sure if that one ended up in a sticky here or not..

Re: BOVs and Wastegates

Externals are better. Superior boost control. Larger valve, stiffer springs (up to 21-22 psi), no shyte arms or brackets to flex, etc.

Re: BOVs and Wastegates

I make every effort to avoid all instant messaging services. As soon as I log on, I get bombarded with message windows I would just start a thread, there are plenty of poeple here that can help.
