Advice for a Car Buying Newb

Hey guys,

I must admit, I am a complete rookie when it comes to buying cars. I didn't get a great deal buying my first car (01' Civic Sedan LX purchased last year). I am making payments on the thing, but I am wanting to upgrade to another car.
Hopefully a Scion Tc...

So what would logically be the best bet? Trade in the civic at the dealership, sell myself? I still owe 10k on the car.

Any general suggestions, tips is greatly appreciated. I would like to go into the next purchase with a bit more knowledge under my belt.

Thanks

13k was the price. (Bought used last year at dealership) Monthly payment is low.
