1979 Camaro

My little sister just picked up a 79 Camaro with a 305 V8 / automatic Trans. I need to get it passed a smog check before I can register it (gotta love those california smog laws). The only problem it has it that it sputrers on take off. I cleaned the carb and that helped but it still sputters a bit. Before I tear into the carb and rebuild it, what else could cause it?
It has new plugs and wires, and the timing is set at 4.
Any ideas?

Checking the plugs might be a good idea. It happened to my car when i bought it also, changed the plugs and it sounded like a different motor.

Re: 1979 Camaro

When you take off it looses power for a second or two. I'ld almost think it was timing but I set it to what the book says. I has a 2-barrel pieces of factory crap carb on it. When she gets the money I'm gonna put a better one on it.

Re: 1979 Camaro

Well I picked-up a carb rebuild kit at Auto Zone for 17 bucks and just did it... That did the trick and it passed smog! That baby is running great now. I think it might even take my wifes 76 cobra II.

I've got one hell of a happy sister. I told her if I catch her hot rod'n it I'll slap a govoner on it. Now I can get back to rebuilding my 64 ranchero.

Re: 1979 Camaro

I had a 78 Chevy 3/4 ton that acted like that once. The float was sticking. As for putting a govoner on it.. Hell no!
I just want to put the fear in her so she dosen't get too crazy with out there, cause that puppy is FAST!

Re: 1979 Camaro

lol, well its definatly a concern, take her out to a drag strip (or open road) to get the acceleration out of her system, and then take her out to a big open asphault playground like a parking lot, and let her put it sideways, do doughnuts and the like. then when you get home, download pics of car crashes, and medical blood and guts, and tell here there is a time and place for "spirited driving", you shouldnt have any problems
