My local BP states that there is 10% Ethanol in the fuel. I use regular 87. Does anybody know if this is a good thing or bad? A friend said it doesn't burn as efficiently...

As far as I have been told......it is fine to run UP TO 10%, but I wouldn't go over that 10% mark. I don't know of any station that has over 10%, but just be aware of this when your buying your fuel.

I've used 10% ethanol for over 20 years. No problems. You might notice lower fuel economy, but not by much.
Nice in the winter, keeps the moisture from building up in the tank. |

Re: 10% Ethanol?
If the truck has a few miles on it and you notice any stalling or sluggish response after running the mixed gas, you may save yourself a trip to a garage by replacing the fuel filter.
I don't recall if it's Ethanol or that MTBE stuff, but one of those fuel additives loosens crud and deposits in the fuel tank/lines, which may then clog the filter, gas-starving the engne. It's one of those intermittent problems that are hard to recreate and hence diagnose, but has a really simple, inexpensive (potential) fix. . |

Yes that "can" happen, but it generally doesn't. My '92 Lumina went over 100,000 before it needed a fuel filter, and I use gasohol almost 100% of the time. It was METHANOL that did the dirty work. That was 20+ years ago. Plugged fuel filters like there was no tomorrow, and generally stuff got into the carb, too. Not only did it "clean out" YOUR gas tank, but it cleaned out the underground tank at the station, too. And you can imagine how bad and leaky some of them were! Back then, "gasohol" was 5%--10% methanol, and that was evil. 10% ethanol is MUCH less corrosive, although it WILL remove moisture from your tank. Of course, the underground tanks are EPA required to be properly maintained. So most of the problems associated with gasohol are history. |
