1993 Toyota 4-Runner Auto. Trans. Temp. Light Coming On
Hi. I own a 1993 Toyota 4-Runner, 6-cylinder, auto. transmission, 4WD with 93,000 miles. I have had a problem with the auto. transmission temp. (ATT) light coming on. The ATT light only comes on if the outside air temp. is in the upper 80's and when the vehicle has been run on the highway at 70-75 mph for a distance of 65-110 miles with the air conditioning (A/C) on. The ATT light does not seem to come on when the A/C is off given the same above conditions. The transmission feels warm to the touch on the inside of the vehicle and is obviously heating up. My engine seems to be warm too, but the temp. guage for the engine on the dash does not show that it is warm. I have taken it to a Toyota Service Center and they could not find a problem. I have also taken it to a transmission place and they indicated that it could be the radiator....but no difinitive test results. The transmission seems to be operating fine....no strange noises or shifting problems. I initially thought it could be the trans. temp. guage, but the trans. is definately heating up and I need to pull the vehicle over and let it idol till the ATT light goes off. Does anyone know what the problem(s) could be??? I would like to get it fixed before it ruins the transmission.
Thanks. |

Re: 1993 Toyota 4-Runner Auto. Trans. Temp. Light Coming On
There may be nothing wrong with the transmission. It may be you need to replace the temperature sensor or clean its connection with the wiring harness. Transmissions normally get hot when running, so feeling them is no way to detect a problem with overheating.
If the sensor checks out good and cleaning the connector has no effect, then it is possible your transmission cooler is partially plugged. In this case, the transmission is really overheating. Transmission coolers are not that expensive or hard to install. If it is overheating, I would buy a TRD transmission cooler and install it.

It sounds like the transmission cooler, given the fact that it doesn't happen when the A/C is off. With the A/C on it creates more heat and the cooler is unable to keep up...Just my guess!

Deb, thanks for the e-mail. Its good to hear that you got it fixed.
Update: Deb informed me that it was the cooler lines. The lines had been installed incorrectly, bypassing the radiator.

Re: 1993 Toyota 4-Runner Auto. Trans. Temp. Light Coming On
From PM:
"The transmission was cooled by a small portion of the radiator and it was not cooling the transmission especially when the air was running on a hot day. The temp. sensor was fine as were all the couplings. I had a separate transmission cooler installed that by passed the radiator. That solved the problem and my gas mileage increased.....an unexpected side benefit."
