Wow that is some gas guzzler for a 4 cylinder! I had the same problem with my 97 CR-V, here are the few things I did to improve the fuel economy:

1) Changed spark plugs to BOSCH Platinum +4 (I tried Iridiums, Platinum +2, splitfire, etc., and the Platinum +4 works the best for me)

2) Changed to K&N air filter

3) Regular inspection of tire pressure (28-32 psi)

4) When on the highway, I try to keep a steady speed/pace, say 65-75 mph max.

This greatly improved my fuel efficiency considering I have over 120K mi on my CR-V. I hope this might help improving yours.

Re: gas mileage is bad...

What gas mileage are you getting on a full tank? You can't accurately tell what your mileage is unless you empty the tank and fill it a few times. Take an average and you should get a more accurate number.

Re: gas mileage is bad...

I have a '97 CR-V AWD. When I got it used with 115,000 miles, it was getting about 350 miles/tank. In the past two months, my mileage dropped to about 290 per tank. I had a full tune-up done on it and that helped some...I get about 330/tank now. I think that part of the issue may be with the winter weather...perhaps winter fuel additives are affecting mileage. Also, I often let it idle for about 10 minutes in the morning to warm up, and this may be part of the issue, as well. I know that's a simple thing, but it may make some difference.

Excessive idling will increase your fuel consumption. Really, your vehicle is ready to go right at the point the motor has oil presure built up (10 seconds max). If it's really cold outside, drive the vehicle easy for a few miles, to let things reach operating temp.

Re: gas mileage is bad...

I'm in the always cold Northeast and I have a 2001 CRV. I do not let it idle in the morning, unfortunately do almost 90% city driving and still get anywhere from 20-24 MPG's in the winter and better in the summer. While I believe that K&A filters are good the cost versus gain isn't significant enough for me to make the change.
