Box dimensions

OK...I'm pretty new to car audio, but I now want to add a sub and amp after getting my new headunit in a few months back. Because I'm on a budget, plus the fact that I like doing stuff myself, I plan on building the sub box myself....now here's my question:
The Apline I'm looking at buying (fits my needs, price range, have read good stuff about it, etc) has this written with the other sub details: sealed box volume: 0.8-1.7 cu. ft. Does this mean that the box can have any dimensions as long as they're in that volume range? Should I err on one side of that spectrum for better performance?
Thanks in advance for any help
BTW-This is the sub I'm looking at: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-06cmrZT...1242&id=review . For my needs, (and the price) it's perfect, but should anyone have any objections, please voice them.

Re: Box dimensions

I would say go with a Type-S at least, but if thats all the bass you need for the type of music you listen to...its a nice sub. My cousins husband has one in a sealed 1.5' cu box with 3/4" MDF in his Suburban, run by a Legacy amp, and it sounds quite nice actually. They dont shake you or anything, but you can hear it good, especially bumping bass.
