anti-theft chip

Does anyone know if there is a way to bypass the anti-theft chip on my 1991 Bonneville .It used to start if you jiggled it ,now doesn't. The card plugs into a clip by the E brake release .It looks like two of the prongs on the clip are worn down. The strips on the card are also worn,it says electro lock on the card. I've had the car for since it was a year old and never took the card out like it was meant to be used. Thanks for any help on this.

If it's a 91 then it's not the factory VATS system so it could be just about anything. If it's what I'm thinking though, these devices are capable of interrupting 1-3 different circuits. Usually crank, maybe fuel and something else but there are many posibilities. To make matters worse, all of the wires are black so jumping takes considerably longer thus a somewhat effective anti-theft system.

I ask that you post a pic so I can verify that you have the device that I'm thinking of.

The wires are all a different color.There are six of them.The chip or card is only needed when starting the car as I knew it .I never drove it without the card in place .It may do all the thing you stated. I did find the company that made it and tried to contact them but no luck so far.Thanks for replying.

If you are adventurous, you could take a multimeter or continuity tester and find out what pins on that chip have continuity. For example, the meter may show that pins 1 & 4, 2 & 6 and 3 & 5 have continuity. This means that current will pass from pin 1 to pin 4 [...ect] when the chip is inserted. Many times the pin continuity is varied so another chip would not work in another vehicle. In the example, you could simply connect the corresponding wires (1 to 4, 2 to 6 and 3 to 5) together to restore operation.

I sure could use a pic of that thing to determine that I'm thinking of the same device though.

I checked it with a meter ,1&4, 2&3,5&6 show continuity.I didn't read any resistance. So it looks like I can connect these and eliminate the chip.
I took a picture but I 'm not sure how to post it. Thanks again for your help.

It sounds like you have a good handle on how to correct the problem. Connect the pairs you have found and you should be OK.

There is a photo gallery on this forum but i haven't figured that one out yet. I use an image hosting site. www.photobucket.com . This is a free hosting site that requires registration. Once you sign up, you can upload pics from your computer. After that, you can copy and paste the address for remote linking that is formatted like this:
