What Muffler?

I have about $200 to spend on a muffler for my '99 grand am gt, i am looking for something that sounds deeper and gives some performance. I called Flow master and the guy was a dick to me on the phone and said that they may have a muffler that they can match up to my car, so is their one? Or what brand should i get and what model. A link to a good one would be nice.

Re: What Muffler?

Well the guy a flowmaster must not know what he is talking about. A flowmaster muffler will go onto any car just have to make sure your inlet is the same as your exhaust pipe which shouldn't be a problem. i have a flowmaster 40 series on my 92 Quad 4. It sounds awesome. But just adding a high performance muffler you really aren't gonna notice any difference in power. maybe a .1 off your 1/4 mile time. look on www.flowmastermufflers.com if you wanna flowmaster or check magnaflow. but where i went for mine the guy brought out one of each and the flowmaster was a little loud and deep tone. sounds great.

The problem with flowmaster is size. On my 95 gt, the driver's side was the easy one to match, but the passenger side was impossible, the can is shorter than anything they have, and their shortest one would have hit the fuel inlet for the gas tank. You could relocate the muffler on the passenger side to right after the rear suspension, I thought about doing that but both mufflers are visible on my car, and having only one muffler visible with dual exhaust would have looked silly....

Re: What Muffler?

I'd go with a magnaflow, or possibly a dynaflow (quieter). And the 99 gt stock muffler is actually pretty restrictive - an aftermarket muffler should bring at least 5 hp; more if other exhaust components have been modded.

Re: What Muffler?

Just wondering, but what would you guys recommend for a 99 Grand Am SE. I don't care about power, just Sound. I want people to hear me.

I haven't done the mufflers yet on my 93 GA 3.3GT, but the good thing about the usual Midas, Meineke muffler shops is that they can custom just about anything, provided that the mechanic is worth his salt.

Ideally you could have them hang the mufflers anywhere past the CAT, and then just run the dual tail pipes out towards the regular factory exits.

I have an eye on the flowmaster 40 series.
