power steering noise

My wife's 2000 SE had a leak in one of the power steering lines. We took it in and had both lines replaced. Now, you can still hear a whining noise from inside the car. You can't really hear it outside the car. We took it back to the shop and they said the pump itself was good that you will always hear some whining. I think that's a bunch of crap but I don't remember what it sounded like before the line went out. Anyone have an idea??? I would really appreciate it...it's driving me nuts...and so is she

I would start by checking the fluid, make sure they put enough in after repairing the leak sometimes they fix but don't check the fluids. I do know that they tend to make a slight whine or at least mine does... but if it is rather loud, I would say there maybe some damage to the bearings, due to the leak, hopefully this helps

Re: power steering noise

I checked that and even drained most of the reservoir and filled it to level with Lucas Power Steering Fluid thinking that that would settle down the noise. That stuff is real good but it did not help. It's not unbearable but it's annoying. Thanks for your help. Where are the bearings located?

Re: power steering noise

Is the noise coming from the PS pump or could it be comming from the steering rack? You may be hearing it inside the car because the rack is real close to the firewall. Just a thought.

Re: power steering noise

Just a thought..but you might have air in the power steering system. Do this: Start the car and turn the wheel all the way left and then all the way right several times. Don't stop when you get to one side, you want to keep the steering wheel moving. That will 'bleed' the air out of the system. Let me know how it turns out.
