Alternator or some other problem?
Ok i was driving today just to stretch the cars legs a bit and on my way home when i would hit about 10 psi it feels like my car hits a wall. Now i had this problem before and it was broken stock plug wires arcing out so i switched to the nology hotwires and it was fine but thats exactly what it feel like. I get home and my electronics start acting up, radio glitching, radar dector going nuts, etc... and then the car stutters a few times and dies. I go to start it and nothing just click click click... Does this sound like a bad alternator or something else? Also even when the car is on the headlights come up extremly slow. And would a bad alternator make your car runs like shit while driving?

Re: Alternator or some other problem?
to diagnose alt. take the battery down to oreillys, have them check the battery first. in the process they will charge it for you. if the battery is good take it home and put it in the car. if you have a multimeter then start the car and check the voltage accross the battery, if the alt is good voltage will come up at 14+ volts. also make sure that the car is idling at a fair speed, i like to go about 1200 rpm just to make sure the alt is spinning fast enough. if the alt is bad then the voltage will read below 13volts. has been a good way to check for me so far.
also stuff acting stupid (radio, lights, etc.) check and make sure that all of your fuses under the dash are tight. i had the same problem with things turning on and off randomly and all i had to do was bend the blades a little to give them a tight contact. good luck. let me know if you need help with the easiest way to change an alt. |

Re: Alternator or some other problem?
yes, that sounds like an electrical problem. your alternator quit charging the system so your car was running off the battery and the battery can only go for so long and then it shut everything down.

Re: Alternator or some other problem?
Ok but would it also make it run like crap while the motor is under more of a demand like at higher boost levels?

Re: Alternator or some other problem?
OH YEAH... when the engine is under more of a load it does use more juice... My guess would be the alternator.... another way of telling if it's the ALT... while the car is idling, disconnect the battery... if the alt is doing it's job it should keep the car running... if not it is, or is going bad... I agree also with having a load test done on your battery also... might be a combination of both the battery and ALT
