Clean a TB?

As the mechanic was replacing my TP sensor, he said I need to clean out my throttle body. How does one do this properly?

Also one question, he said my coil was turning white which meant it was going bad. Is this true? If so, how much does one cost? It looked easy enough to take out so can I do this myself?

Thanks!

Re: Clean a TB?

Buy Throttle Body cleaner at Autozone ($4). Take off the plastic cover of the air intake. What you then see is the throttle body but what you actually clean is the carbon buildup from the inside sides and the "butterfly". Push the butterfly open and try to clean the underside as well. Also clean throroghly where the butterfly pivots. Just spray TB cleaner and wipe with a rag. Don't let anything fall in. You can use a toothbrush too if there is alot of carbon buildup.

Should take you 5 minutes.

Coil turning white? Not sure ... any symptoms of a bad coil?

Re: Clean a TB?

Follow the directions that drdd explained above.

But don't worry about any TB cleaner getting into it seeing that is what it is meant to do.

Scrub all the crud off of the butterfly with tb cleaner and an old toothbrush and make sure you get the top and bottom side. Rinse off the everything with the cleaner and remember to get everything including the inside of the throttle body bore.

The white stuff could be white deposits on your coil connection which goes to the cap.

Clean it completely and use some dielectric grease when you reattach the cap wire to the coil.
