Question 88 2.2 cylinder head on 86 2.0 block

i have a 1988 mazda pickup with a 2.0 liter engine. it overheated and i took on the project of rebuilding the complete engine.my friend sold me a 2.2 liter cylinder head for 40 bucks...he said it only had a 100 miles on it..after questioning around i assumed it wouldn't work on the 2.0 block.. so i bought a rebuilt one from cylinder heads international..only the tag in the bag with the head says b2200 itself which means it's a 2.2 liter i think..the numbers on the new head are F8-14 MY old one is F8-11 and the one my friend sold me is F8-17..so their all F8s' so can someone help me??? thanks, chris

Cylinder Head interchange

The B2200 and B2000 both are the same head. The only difference is the older B2000 have mechanical rocker arms which most consider better for reliability and performance over the hydraulic. The F8-17 cylinder head probably would have been the best casting, most likely it came off of a 90 or 91 model truck, the F8-14 probably came off of an 88 or 89.

Just thought you would like to know. I have an 86 B2000. I am in the process of rebuilding the engine (very slowly). The block is shot, crank key way stripped, rod bearings gone, crank scoured, knocking like it is going out of style!! lol My buddy passed me a 2.2 block to get my truck running. I was trying to figure out which head gasket I should use, since the block was from a 2.2 and the head is from a 2.0, Since I work at a reputable autoparts (get in the zone!!) lol, I was able to do a side by side (or top on top) comparison. The two gaskets were practically identical except for one feature, the piston openings on the 2.0 gasket were a hair wider. That's it! I hope this information helps any body who might read it...................L8RS!

That is kind of odd as the B2000 has a smaller bore. The fire rings on the B2200 gasket are large enough for the engine even if it is bored .060" over. If the gasket on the 2.0 liter does have larger fire rings I would buy one from the 2.2 liter engine then, it will give slightly better compression and since there will be a smaller crevace for fuel to get trapped in will have slighly less HC emissions.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep note of that.
