differential kaboom

ok i have a 1996 eagle talon esi 5spd sitting in my driveway with something wrong. a couple of months ago something happend while i was driving something went kaboom and then now it wont go. i thought the bellhousing untill today i lifted it up because when it happend i saw a hole near the bellhousing so thats my thought. i picked up a piece of metal out of the road and oil was every were on the road. so i looked under the car to realize its a hole in the differential cover was the hole. but i thought it was a 2 inch hole but unpon closer examination i realized that literaly half of the housing is gone and i can see the whole differential. did the differentail explode or what? is that the differential oil on the road? it looks like its still in tact so obviously i need a new cover but what else? its installing one easy? will i have to pull the motor? and help would be awsome thanks

isn't that what happens when a rod goes through, it cracks a hole in the diff. or is that just the oil pan.

this is a really strange thing there is no engine damage. i can crank it up just great. i blew my clutch 2 months before and had a new clutch. i was driving along and i donno what but i just hear a boom!!!!! i was travling 55mph andthe boom happend.
it was so vilont that it jerked my bar back. so i thought it was the engine. i droped it in neutral and coasted to off the road. i pop my hood and steam flew out and a gold color fluid had flown all over the fan,and all the hoses around the radiator cap.
it definatly came from the radiator cap because it was still coming out. so i look under and i see a hole and dark fluid was flowing from the hole. i looked in the road and saw a streak of oil i left in the road about 20 or 30 feet and i picked up a piece of what flew apart and kept it. my dad was looking at it toaday and noticed that something was rubbing this piece all to hell and left a deep line through it.
i hope this helps. so will i have to pull the motor and tranny out to make the install? also one more thing i saw a phantom grip limited slip differential for 270 bucks. thats not to bad seeing as how i might need to buy a new differential anyhow so 270 would be the ballpark figure for a oem differential right? also last thing that might helpyou guys is when i had my talon lifted the left wheel spins really really easy without any resistance.
the car was in gear and its not suppost to do that right? so and help is great to tackle this. thanks
