95 Geo Metro Engine Change

Hello all!

I have a 95 Geo Metro 1.0 litre 3 cylinder 5 speed that has thrown a rod. I have had no luck in finding a used motor at the auto wreckers, being told that the 95 was a stand-alone different engine from all other years. Can anyone tell me what the differences are? Also, what would be involved changing it to a 1.3 litre 4 cylinder? Seems there are plently of those around.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Better answer may be to get a JDM motor. I just replaced the motor in my 95 1 litre with one I got shipped from NY to TX for less than $500.00 total. I don't know what the failure was exactly, stopped running on the way to work, discovered the timing belt was broken, replaced it but it wouldn't start. Got it to catch a little by advancing the timing but it wouldn't stay running. Checked the compression and came up with #3 being around 60 lbs lower at 90 lbs. I figured that was why it stopped running so I ordered the JDM motor. Had to swap more items than I wanted to, timing belt needed replaced and I didn't have any more money for another one so I had to swap the gears (metro uses half moon shaped gears JDM swift has square cut gears) 2 sensors in coolant flow instead of one, etc. I got it in and running but it was low on power and had a check engine light. Check light turned out to be a failed o2 sensor but that still didn't get the power back and it was running hot. I started advancing the timing and I've ended up probably over 15 degrees advanced. Don't know if the cam is different or I have a computer issue, but it runs smooth and everything seems good. The motors are supposed to have less than 50000 miles, avg 30000 to 40000 so I should have many happy miles with it.

Re: 95 Geo Metro Engine Change

89 to 95 on the 1 liter should be the same except for the early motor had 4 bolts holding the crank pully and the later (around 93 or 94 can't remeber) had 5. The timing belt is also different. On 96 and up, they used a crank sensor mounted on the oil pump and the belt was longer. I have a used 1 L out of a 93 parts car that ran great I would sell for $100. I am in Kansas City would like to have it picked up. Email me @ [email protected] if you want it.
