I have a 95 Plymouth Neon. The timing belt broke. Is there any way to tell if the valves or pistons are damaged with tearing the engine down?
Thanks Phil |

More than likely you bent some valves unless you are just that lucky. A compression test might help, but you can have bad compression on a car w/o bent valves!

Re: Damage for Timing Belt Failure
More than likely, you've got bent valves. Sorry, but there is some good news. I just saw a complete head on ebay for $15, shipping $50. The auction maybe over, but look in the ended auctions because I don't think anyone bid on it. New valves cost at least that much, trust me, I just went through similar bad luck, not timing belt, but the timing belt tensioner pulley. I would suggest getting a new one if you're gonna be in there anyway. Good Luck.

Re: Damage for Timing Belt Failure
A simple compression test would certaily tell you if you have bent valves but you must have a timing belt on it to get a compression reading I broke 2 timing belts on 2 different sohc 2.0 neons and one off them I had to replace 3 valves the other one I did not have to replace any valves (so you can get lucky) new valves are about $10 or 15 apiece I think, but if you pay a mechanic to do it the labor will be at least $1000

Re: Damage for Timing Belt Failure
if i remember correctlly, the 95 neon has an interference engine, so there's a pretty good chance you have some messed up valves
