Re: turbo 4.3 CPI

for the money, you are best off just dropping the 350 in it.

Same or even cheaper cost, more power and more reliable.

Besides, the only one that was made for the CPI was by whipple and GM sued them to stop making it. Once in a while though you can find them on ebay

Re: turbo 4.3 CPI

why wouldn't it work on the CPI after putting in custom tubing? also theres less computer issues and tranny issues with a turbo set up then a 350. although it would be nice to have.

The CPI motor is not a good candidate for a turbo seeing it is speed density type of fuel and emmisions management.

What you need is a mass airflow sensor equipped engine which allows you a lot more flexibility when tuning fuel mixtures etc...

That is why you see all the boosting option only available for 1996+ which is when they switched to MAF fuel calibration.

You can't just slap a turbo on it and call it a day, you have to think about fuel ratio curves, timing etc.....

Re: turbo 4.3 CPI

then how was wipple able to super charge it. it has a map sensor on it which works like a mass air flow but not the same. the coputer would adjust everything for it. if it didn't then there would be no O2 sensors, no map or any other type of air flow sensor. i it would be fine if it was set up right. i wasn't going to do it. i was going to have a shop that does it all the time to do it.

Whipple included a modified ECM with their turbo setup from what I remember. Again though, GM sued them into submission...

modified ECM was included with this package as well.

And it was a supercharger, not a turbo.

A custom turbo setup will require a lot of ECM tuning which in the end could cost over a $1000 itself.

350 is cheaper.

Re: turbo 4.3 CPI

Actually it was a turbo..(hence why GM sued) Almost bought one for 2500 a year ago when a couple of em came up for sale on ebay... No one as yet has made a s/c for the CPI the Bill Mach (www.machperformance.com) has been toying with the idea. Don't know what the current status is if any though.

Re: turbo 4.3 CPI

My mistake, there was a procharger released for the CPI I think.

Here is one here:

I think the typhoons had a modified TBI setup.
