Try to narrow which cylinder is having issues. Does it run like a lopey dragster? These engines will rattle your brain if a cylinder is not firing. Is it a loud tick and is it from the upper or lower portion of the engine?
These engines are known for ticking. If it's pretty loud, take a look at the oil pressure. You may want to test it with a mechanical gauge. The gauges in the truck are a 3 position switch. If it has low oil pressure, you may want to check the lash on each rocker arm. There may be wear on the cam lobes or lifters, causing more lash, causing the tick. Or even just worn lifters. The bad part is that you have to take the heads off to get the lifters out, if they're shot. You also have to pull the motor to replace the oil pump. It's possible to change it in the truck, but you basically have to unbolt everything you would to pull it and jack it up as high as it can go + more. I've heard from many to just pull it, easier, quicker, safer. I wouldn't trust some jack holding an engine from crushing my head

.
It's just a theory, you'll need to research more to find where the click is coming from and why. Before mine went, I would get off the high way and it sounded like my engine was about to throw a rod. Rebuilt it to find that everything was in good shape. Oil pump was shot, rod bearings were a little toast, mains were good, cam was toast, not sure about the lifters/push rods, I didn't inspect, I just replaced. This was @ 98,000 miles

. The pervious own did not regularly keep up on the maintaince, this is what causes these engines to go bad. Overheating is a big no-no too. This will cause the heads to crack, especially on the 86-88s. I've heard of 2.9Ls lasting 300,000 miles+. I've heard of people using additives like Marvel Mystery oil to help ticking, but I've never saw it work for myself. I've also hear of people putting a little seafoam in their oil for a few miles, but this might make all the sludge drop down into the oil pan and clog the pickup tube for the oil pump. Same w/ tranny fluid. I wouldn't recommend additives in the oil, but they're out there. Also, always use motorcraft oil filters on the 2.9L. Frams will cause low oil pressure.
