2002 Explorer 4.0L cranks, but won't start

I'm new to this forum, but it looks like a nice forum!!!

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L engine with approximately 55,000 miles. Been running like a champ....until tonite!!!! My wife wen't to pick up some carry out, and in the time it took her to walk in, grab the bag, and walk back out (absolutely no longer than 10 minutes)...the truck won't start!! There hasn't been any warning signs of ANY kind before this!!!! It will crank just fine...and if it has been sitting for a couple of minutes...when you go to crank it...it will start and whirrrr up like when it normally starts...for just a tiny split second and then it goes back to the regular cranking!! I know it's not flooded, because I let it set for about an hour, so then I tried the fuel pump safety reset and that did nothing...so then I thought maybe it was the coil, but if you pull one of the plug wires off, you can see a spark jumping around in there, so there is atleast something going to the plugs, and even if that was the problem...I would think that it would let it run a little rough, as opposed to nothing!!

It's really got me buffalowed...When it starts and runs perfectly fine, and you drive 2 miles down the road, then let it set for no longer than ten minutes, and come back and nothing!!!???

You got to love it huh!!!

I'm hoping somebody can save me a trip to the shop!!!

Thank You
Roger

The first thing to check after spark is fuel pressure. You can pick up a fuel pressure gauge for fifteen bucks or so and screw it onto the check port on the fuel rail. Key on engine off pressure should be fourty psi or more. Usually they work, or don't, low pressure is not generally a problem as long as you've been keeping up on your fuel filter changes. Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out!
