Trans on 1995 vr6 glx wagon

Took car to dealer to check trans level. Trans was acting up when motor was cold;It slipped and banged into gear until warm up . Dealer added 1.5 quarts;So far so good.What i really liked is when i picked the car up the manager told me no charge .My question is my next project is tie rod's inner and outer on both sides.Can this be repaired at most shop's.My first oil changed when i bought the car was a disaster at a quick change place. Since then I've always had work done by the dealer.....Mike
