Question PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

Please answer unbiased and honestley.. I beg.
Are the r-x7s unrealiable? Ive heard that they cost alot to keep and that after 80-90k miles you have to drop like 4 grand to rebuild everyting back to stock running condition. My freind has a 93 rx7and he tells me not to get it because its not worth what it cost... but i think he just dosent want me to get one as well. Please help me out
by the way its a im looking at 3rd gen 93-97 ... am i correct? the one im looking at has 105k miles

my opinion, whats the fun if it doesn't give you a reason to get under the hood every now and then

3rd gen is 93-95, if its got 105k miles your looking at a rebuild. you can get rebuilds for like 1500 if you find the right person to do it.

Re: PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

Go to rx7club.com for a detailed discussion on this. The 3rd gen is a much more fragile car than the 1st and 2nd gen. I would agree that unless the car has been properly maintained AND not driven hard, it is ready for a rebuild.

But what is the fun if you have to drive it like a Civic.

I would also argue that a proper rebuild will cost WAY more than $1,500. Maybe if you are tuned into the RX7 scene, and know a good RX7 tech who will do it on the side, and who also has a line on parts. I would suspect that if you get out less than $4k or $5k you are lucky. Beyond the internals of the engine, typically the turbo's and other external parts have to be replaced as part of the rebuild. Plus, at that mileage, you might as well replace the clutch and a myriad of other things while you have the engine out.

Having just given reasons not to buy one, they are one of the sexiest high performance cars ever built. Just plan on having to spend time getting to know the car and what you are dealing with, along with money to maintain it, particularly if you are not mechanically inclined.

Good luck!

On a third gen? Did that include everything?

- Parts? Did they replace anything besides seals and gaskets?
- Labor
- Removal and installation

Just curious. If you did get it for $1,800 including everything on a 3rd gen, that is a good price.

Re: PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

my 3rd gen needed turbos and a rebuild. spent 10 grand on everything plus labor. of coarse i went alittle nuts with parts, but it was sick!!!!!now my 2nd gen set me back 5k recently. but i got a warranty on my engine and it will be like new for a while. nothing beats driving a rx7 turbo.

Re: Re: PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

well 1st off i dont agree that they are the the best production cars ever,
they are fast.. but 1 they are 2 seaters (not good for me) 2 rotary is unreliable, the supra,99 mustang gt,3000gt vr4, and so on are just as fast, some faster and they all have more reliable engines and a back seat , you know what im sayin... .Ill leave the rx to you guys, do your thing, no hate on your cars, they would be tight if i diddnt have to drive 2-3 people around. But i hate those Virually Tourqeless Economy Cars aka VTEC. dont get me started

thanks for your help

love peace, chicken grease

Re: PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

well if u need room buy a van. sports cars are supposed to be for one thing, to go fast. less weight, better handling.i bet a 93 rx7 would outhandle all the cars u just listed. plus its more stylish and rare. supra is probably a little faster, but more expensive and handles worse. just my 2 cents, dont mind me, u could never in a million years convince me a rx7 isnt one of the best driving cars ever made.(for under a 100,000 dollars of course!)

Re: PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

oh you ignorant fools

u could never in a million years convince me a rx7 isnt one of the best driving cars ever made.(for under a 100,000 dollars of course!)

that just showed me i cant talk sensibly with you because your too biased, theres nothing wrong with it but im wont argue somthing when it cant be argued sensibly.

and for under 100,000 wow man.... you set urself up for this one...where do i start!
not in any order
1.2006 chevy corvette z06 0-60 3.7, will eat you alive
2 any dodge viper
3. 99 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4
4.ford mustang svt cobra 2004
5.lol dodge srt-4. sad when a stock fwd neon is just as fast as you
6.chevy camaro ss
7.pontiac tras am 25th ws6
8.nsx T
9.lol i hate this car the new evo
10. h8 this 2, wrx sti 4 door sedan that will out run, out handle, out class you, and can fit 5 people ^^
the list is alot bigger but i think you see my point

its one thing to argue with a point, but if you have nothing, admit defeat. its ok to love you car but to say its the best when it has so many points of problems, is lying to yourself.

and dont forget thats the car they stopped production on ^^

so please, be reasonable.

to level headed rx owners no hate, i love the car, but not for me

love peace, chicken grease

Re: PLEASE HELP ME- BEFORE I DROP 8 grand in the TRASH

160,000 on an RX7, any RX7, and I would want to see the entire maintenance history, and even expect that an engine rebuild was done along the way.

I know there are some that have gotten over 200k from their 7, but it is more typical that they go 120k to 150k assuming they have had a reasonable level of care.

Now, if the body was clean and the price was right, I could see budgeting for a rebuild. Like anything, it depends on what you want out of it: hobby car, daily transportation, etc.

As an aside, I am selling my 1985 RX7 with 160k (rebuild at 119k and complete maintenance records since new). I am the fourth owner. Car has appropriate mods: Weber, header, suspension, rims, etc. I can send details if interested.

I love these cars, particularly the '79 thru '85, but they do have their weak points.

To bad you dont live near me, id take you fro a ride and prove that point to be botyh right and wrong.
With the money i have put into my car im sure i coudl beat most of the cars listed above. But that took ALOT of money and time to do. I woudl not be suprised if i have put over 100k into the car in parts and labour (althouth the labour was my own so that dosent count).

I have raced every car on that list with the exception of the new Z06 (i havent even seen one yet). And i have came out on top (keep in mind these were stock or mainly stock cars and mine is far from it. But to say a stock RX7 is on par or near on par with any of those cars listed abouve is a total dilusion onset by to many ATF assisted starts :P
