97 Geo Wont start!!!!

Hello, I have a 1997 Geo Metro, automatic, 4 cylinder. I was driving it down the road & all the sudden everything just shut down. Now it won't start at all. It sounds like it's gonna start, but there's no spark! I know nothing when it comes to cars, but would like an idea of what's wrong with it before I take it to the shop, so I don't get ripped off!
I have been told it could be that the timing is off, but would like any ideas on what all of you think it might be! Thanks!

Sounds like a broken timing belt to me. Take the distributor cap off really quick, and then try and start the engine. If the rotor turns, your timing belt is ok. If it stays still, your belt is broken.
