It won't program if it is not the correct part#

Start with the ignition OFF, hold down the power unlock button on the door panel. Turn ignition key ON, OFF, ON, OFF. Release power unlock button on the door panel. The locks will cycle once.
Hold down the keyless entry transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for 15 seconds. The locks will again cycle once.
Repeat step #2 for each additional keyless entry transmitter.
Turn the ignition on to exit the keyless entry transmitter programming mode. Programming is now complete

1. Locate the Data Line Connector (DLC) underneath the driver's side dashboard. The sockets/cavities aren't numbered. Look straight into the cavities of the DLC. Notice how the DLC is tapered on both ends - you'll be working on the wider row of cavities. (call 'em #'s 1-8; #'s 9-16 are in the narrower side)

2. Make sure there are metal contact pins in terminals 8 and 4. (#8 being at the right end, when DLC is viewed with the wider side up with a row of 8 cavities, and the narrower side down with another row of 8 cavities) and connect the DLC terminal 8 with terminal 4 with a suitable jumper wire. (leave the jumper connected through the entire programming procedure) MAKE SURE you know which terminals are 8 and 4! The vehicle should respond by cycling the locks (locking/unlocking) to signify entering of programming mode.

3. Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons together on your transmitter/remote, After about 15 seconds, the vehicle will respond by cycling the locks. Release the buttons on your transmitter.

4. Within ONE MINUTE, repeat the previous step on any additional transmitters to be programmed.

5. Remove the jumper wire from the DLC.

*Above is from the instructions from a company which sells remotes and keys.
