Question 95 XLT - two power windows work, 2 don't

I have a 95 Exporer 4 door XLT. 2 of the power windows work, two don't (Driver's and the passenger rear seat don't work). I've replaced the fuse in the Power Distribution box under the hood (it was still good - just making sure) and the Power Windows/Locks/Seats relay under the driver's dash. No changes. I've pulled the One Touch Down relay, but the other two windows still work, so that shouldn't be the fault.

I've checked all the other electrical systems (lights, locks, radio, wipers, etc.) and all appear to be working.

I've disconnected each of the door's switches - again no change in the functionality.

I think I'm left with the GEM (General Electronic Module) behind the radio. But the local dealership doesn't carry it, and it's $250, so I want to make sure that it solves the issue before I continue.

Has anyone seen similar problems? Anyone know how to check the GEM before shelling out $250?

You've said you disconnected the switches and no change in functionality? Did you test the switches? Or swap a known good one with a bad one? I don't have the diagrams in front of me but I believe the GEM is responsible for supplying the 12 volts for windows, however it supplies B+ to the drivers switch and from there it is jumped to the other switches. So if 2 of your windows work then the GEM is doing its job. My bet is a switch problem. Plus it's a heck of alot cheaper to replace a switch, so be sure!

Re: 95 XLT - two power windows work, 2 don't

I've check the voltage at the switches and it is 12 volts on the center spokes. The switches distribute it from there. I've also swapped out the rear door switch with a working lock/unlock switch. No joy.

I guess next is to somehow find the connector at the motor and check for voltage there - although I think I already know what I'll find... Nothing.

Thank you for your help. I'm still t/s'g so any assistance is appreciated!

Have you tested the motors?

I have voltage at the motors. But they still aren't moving. I think I can hear a solenoid clicking at the motor. Not sure why there would be anything there. I don't show anything in my diagrams, though...

The motors show continuity through the wires and resistance to ground. I'm not sure why they aren't turning. This window has a history of sticking, then just starting again. I guess that's what's happening. I'm still digging into the driver's side window.

Re: 95 XLT - two power windows work, 2 don't

OK - I've now determine that for both windows, the electrics are good. I have 12 volts where I'm supposed to, the switches work properly, the motors are not grounded and show continuity.

So, the windows are 'stuck'. Any suggestions on how to break them loose, without breaking them?

TIA

You say the motors are not grounded but they do need a ground to complete the circuit. Be sure you do indeed have a good clean ground. If you meant they don't have a short to ground, then that's a good thing.
If they are just stuck then "Never underestimate the value of a GOOD visual inspection". Be sure the switches that tell it it is allthe way up or down are working. Could be pushing the glass a little too far. If you can physically give the glass a little help while trying to put window up or down, you may break it free and be able to troubleshoot problem better while working. Good luck
