Dude, that is years old.
What if they made little machines that did nothing but grab stuff around them to make duplicates of themselves? Hell, all they'd need to build is one. Then it makes a copy, then they make a copy, then they make a copy... I mean they're always gonna be touching SOMETHING, and if they make it simple enough, the little things can just build themselves over and over and over. How bout those apples? Be like "what's that tingling feeling?" then your leg turns to grey matter.
