Slip Yoke my ass....................................

I have done a lot of research on the dreaded sileverado transmission clunk and have come to the conclusion that this is a internal transmission issue and not at all related to any slip yoke or spline greasing problem. Greasing of the spline may help dampen the "shock" to the drive train while shifting but is only a temporary fix. I often wondered how GM could blame this problem on the yoke when most of these transmissions only clunk in one shift sequence. Mine on the 2-3 upshift. If this were a yoke issue wouldn't this noise be there during all shifts? I did read one TSB from GM stating that this is a result of some solinoid issue that causes a momentary reversal of torque while shifting. This sounds more plausable.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

If you are only feeling the clunk on a 2-3 shift, then you have some transmission problem....most likely it is the selnoid.......The yoke has nothing to do with it....

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

When I put 315's on mine the "clunk" went away. My best guess is the extra drag from the larger diameter tires, but it's gone.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

mork, the clunk that i have heard about is from a dead stop.....
a 2-3 clunk, would be a transmission problem. reset your pcm, see if and for how long it goes away...

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

What is really interesting is that the 2-3 upshift clunk or clank doesn't exist on Tahoe or Avalance all with the same powertrain specs. Go figure!!

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

I have read thread on this problem on the tahoe and the avalanche, so yes they do have the same problem. So does the Cadillac Excalade.

Do the SUV's have a 2 piece driveshaft like our trucks?

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

My Silvey "clunks" and it is most definately the slip yoke. I took the driveshaft out and greased the yoke and no more clunk. Mine only clunked when taking off from a stop. Yes, greasing the yoke is somewhat temporary, about once a year, but I can live with that. The trick is not to use regular ol' grease. Get the stickiest, gooiest crap you can find. I use a wheel bearing grease actually.

Yeah, one of the funniest things I ever saw. Was sitting next to a brand new shiney Escalade at a stoplight. Had my window down and when that Caddy took off..."SQWONK"! Made me feel a little bit better.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

Well, I dont know. I also got an 03 Tahoe and it dont clunk. My old 98 chevy also never clunked. My buddy's got an 04 Avalanche and it shifts smooth. How do you grease the slip yoke, mine's a one piece driveshaft and the slip yoke slides into the transfer case.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

Shoot, mine clunks from a dead stop and the 1-2. I'm not totally sure ATM if it does it on the 2-3, but I wouldn't be suprised. I've had it documented at the dealership, because it was deemed as "normal". I've got about 17,500 on the clock now and I'd be worried more if it stopped doing it rather than continue.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

There's obviously not a definite fix for this 2-3/3-2 clunk issue. I've heard so many temporary fixes it's not funny. But, I haven't greased the yoke yet. My first attempt in a few weeks to fix the problem will be a complete tranny flush, with a new filter, then put in Royal Purple Synthetic, and also replace the servo with Sonne(a)x 77767K & 77767SK super hold servo that states on their site guaranteed to fix this issue. If this doesn't work, I'm selling my truck. I will have owned it for a month. It sucks that I the consumer have to spend money to fix a manufacturing problem. There will never be a recall fellas, The big 3 are in the red. That's why they say it's normal, this problem is so widespread that they'd loose so much money. This is my first American vehicle, only because of the advice of my elders that we make crappy cars. This surely isn't helping, I love my country, BUT I might become a lifetime Nazi or Kamikaze driver for the rest of my life. I'll let you know if this works.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

So, because of a clunk, you're gonna sell your truck? That's wise

Yup, I guess you don't believe in quality craftsmanship. I've never owned a vehicle with this kind of problem, and if there was any problem it was fixed.
I wasn't asked if I like doggystyle. Normal sounds from any vehicle are interior squeaks that come from "age". Not a transmission clunk.

Re: Slip Yoke my ass....................................

Had the clunk...used the new stuff the factory has for the transfer case and ...no more clunk!
