My taurus is a 1998 and I am having trouble with the tranny. I noticed some slippage first thing in the morning when the car was still cold. After the first shift, it was fine. This lasted for several months. Then it seemed to get worse. At that time, I found tranny fluid in the coolant system. Changed radiator, and drained tranny fluid twice. But could not find any moisture in tranny. The tranny will not shift out of first gear. It will shift out of first but will not engage in second. Reverse is also fine. However, when thermostat opens completely, tranny shifts perfect. There is no check engine light showing. Please help!

You might change the fluid and add a can of Lucas additive.
It sounds like the tranny is on it's way out though. You won't be hurting anything by trying it Good Luck Mike

Thanks so much for your info. I will try it out and see what happens. It has about 107,000 miles on it. I wrecked it two winters ago, and didn't have any trouble with it until then. I spun and hit the front corner bumper. I replaced the bumper, but now I need to fix the tranny. I would like to trade it in on a 4x4, because the raods are too bad in the winter. If anyone has anymore info, I can use the advice.
Thanks again, Natalie

Re: 98 Taurus-Tranny problems
if you plan to trade it in then fix the tranny and trade it lol i know when my dad got his fixed, the tranny had to come out 2 more times (it was fine for the first month or 2) so fix trade and buy and as a tip, unless you tend to tow a large camper or somthing, then you would probally be best off buying a small suv (Rav4, CRV, Escape) or a awd car like a Subaru or a Ford 500 nicer to drive and park and not so bad on gas
