'92 88 royale stalling

Hey everyone,
Ive been having some troubles with my 1992 88 Royale for the past few weeks, it keeps stalling on me and driving horribly. it doesnt seem to be affected by heat or humidity in any way, it just stalls for no reason sometimes if i come to stop, or right after i start it. while driving it it seems almost as if its lost half of its horsepower, and at different points in pushing in the gas the entire car will start shaking badly and it doesnt put any power out at all. ive also noticed the smell of gas, as if its running rich. this all started happening one night out of no where after starting it and driving home. we took it to the mechanic and he said that the cam sensor had gone out and that it is also bent so he has to take everything apart to get the sensor out. after this long description my question is what would you guys think the problem is? do you think the mechanic is throwing us through a hoop?

also on a side not, ive always wondered, is ther eany performance parts or anything for these cars?

Thanks for all the help.

What are you looking for?

As far as your problem I would put a guess on a few sensors that would do that or a faulty coil/ICM

im not too sure exactly...i dunno what they are capable of, but mostly first off i want to improve my cars overall performance, and second off i want to see if i can make it go faster ( i know i know, the tuner class really shouldnt be playing around with oldsmobiles...but i really like this car and want to see where it can go

awesome thanks for the ideas. so you think its a good chance it is the cam sensor causing this? had a friend earlier tell me that the mechanic is just ripping us off (he also told me a cam sensor is about as real as muffler bearings...but still kinda worries me)

PS. im not sure since theres no markings on the engine and i cant find the book...but my car does have the 3.8 engine right? all the places i normally check for info doesnt list a 1992 88 royale, so im just wondering thanks again
