timing belt
ok I've searched the forum looking for something that will tell me how to change the timing belt on a 98 4 cyl ranger. Its my dads truck his timing belt broke when he went to start it so it wasn't running when it broke. We got everything off except the underdrive pully. I need to know if there is a special tool to take it off. i tried to take the bolt off but the motor keeps turning even though the e brake is on and the truck is in gear. What next? I wouldn't mind step by step instructions.

if i understand your problem correctly, it is that you can't get the bolt that holds the crankshaft pulley on loose. here's a trick, use a long breaker bar with the right size socket to turn the bolt counter-clockwise while cranking the engine. you can place the bar end against the truck frame or something solid. let the starter do the the work for you. if memory serves the engine turns clockwise so put the breaker bar pointed towards the driver side and crank the engine in short burst. good luck. also don't worry about the valves, this is a "non-interference" engine; meaning the valves and pistons don't knock when the belt breaks.
