Service Engine Light Switch?

Is there a hidden switch on the '96 4 door Tracker that will turn the "Service Engine Soon" light off? It really bugs me and black tape isn't a good option.

Re: Service Engine Light Switch?

I wore the hide off my fingers trying to find that dang switch in the left speaker hole! How about a little more detail on exactly where it is. I appreciate your input.

take the speaker out and the panel under the steering wheel and it is between the 2 openings , some 96 models have it some dont , if you dont then you have to have a scan tool to reset the light , you can go to your local autozone and they can do it for you

Unfortunatly unless you know someone at Autozone, they will not reset it for you, they are not allowed, another one of those things where one person took advantage of it, and there was a lawsuit involved, and now they are not allowed to reset it anymore.

Oops! I found a tiny piece of hide left on one of my fingers, so I'm off to the driveway again. I have a tester that will reset it but it just comes back on showing an O2 sensor (which Has been replaced). I reall appreciate the help from you guys!

I feel like Pearl Harbor all over again. If someone would give me a clue as to what the switch is attached to (ie. wire, bracket, plug, body part, just dangl ing) I would be willing to risk losing my sight looking for it. I HATE BLACK TAPE!

the switch is small about an inch long , the body is black and the switch you slide is red , its just like a on/off switch , if you can clear the codes with your scan tool then your tracker dosent have the switch

Well, that explains it. I'll stop looking and get out the ol' black tape. I sure appreciate you putting this to rest. Now for the skin grafts.......

Re: Service Engine Light Switch?

just because you can clear the codes dosen't mean you don't have the switch however if it is manufactured date is after 7/95 it does not have the switch and try unhooking the ground side ove the battery with the headlight switch on for about 10 min this will completely reset the ecm making search for the o2 sensor again and if it comes back on keep in mind that some of these trackers have 2 o 2 sensors 1 in the exuast manifold and 1 behind the cat hit me personal message after you try that

The ecm did clear but I haven't checked the sensors yet. I'll keep you posted. Thanks a bunch!

Re: Service Engine Light Switch?

why don't you just take the light bulb out of the check engine light on the panel?

on anything newer than 96 it won't pass state emissions with the light on and the bulb isn't how it tells the ecm tells it so removing the bulb solves nothing

by removing the bulb it "solves" just the light problem. i thought you said you wanted to get rid of using the black tape. so taking the bulb out would get rid of the tape problem and no more light on. did not know you had to pass an emission test!
