Question '89 S13 vs. '90-'93 S13

Hi everyone. I'm a newbie to the list here, but I've been reading it for some time. After seeing the 180sx in Japan, I knew I had to get one. My question is; are there any differences between the '89 S13 and the '90-'93 S13?

I've heard the '89 chassis is the lightest. Ive heard the guage clusters are different. I'm not sure but I think the styling is a little different.

I've found an '89 w/ 86k miles on it for $2.5k which is cheap here in colorado. I may be able to negotiate. My budget is limiting me to 5k spent on everything, and I would like to modify this as much as I can(cosmetic and power). That means no engine swaps right now. What do you guys suggest?

Just so you also know...

89-90 are SOHC 130HP
91-94 are DOHC 155HP

And all years had the option of coupe or fastback and some years had the option of convertible (94's were all and only convertibles)

So then ur looking into a fast back since you want a 180SX, cuz the coupe rear end is modeled after the S13, while the Fast back is modeled after the 180sx.

Can't help u on whether or not the 89' model is the lightest, might be since it is an older model and if you find one with few options it will be lighter.and 2500 is not bad, depending on the condition of the car.I myself bought my 91' Fastback for 1500, all it needed was a new motor since the original had 200+, but i got the swapp and am very happy with my fast back now.Still trying to reach that 300hp mark without upgrading to a bigger turbo is frustrating but will be worth it.I'm squeezing 275hp on 9 lbs of boost with upgrades, but am all out of ideas on wut else is needed to break 300hp.I don't want to use more the factory boost cuz i want this engine to last me, specialy for the 4gs i paid for it.

Anybody have any suggestions??

Right now i'm running frount mount intercooler,blitz SSBV,HKS Hiper exhaust,Blitz boost controller,K&N intake,and V-racing Cam shafts.

I heard that i would get more performance out of an HKS mega flow intake?is that tru?

Talking

Was the engine size changed from 90 to 91, or something else? Would you guys recomend against getting the 89 due to the lack of power? Its $2500 w/ new brakes and struts and is in great condition. How much would it be to drop in a 91-93 engine (if i did it myself0?) Sorry for all the stupid questions, Im still learning the history of the cars.

JWT ECU, bigger injectors (550cc or so), if you've got the money then maybe a larger turbo, but be sure to upgrade all of the other stuff to handle the power and not sacrifice the bottom end in the mean time

In the 89-90 240 SX it had a 135hp single cam engine (KA24E)
In the 91 and up it had a 155hp twin cam engine (KA24DE)
The 89 isn't neccesarily a bad car just becaust it has 20 less hp then the 91 and up but if you were ever planning on doing an SR20DET swap then some of the parts that will be needed to complete the swap will need to be gotten from the KA24DE and you will have to go search a junkyard to find them if you don't have the engine. But even if you prefered not to do the SR swap then the KA engine is super strong and can withstand about 350-400hp. Whichever way you decided to go would be good since the 240 is a good car all around. Good Luck

joebowlr21 have you consider gettin a larger down pipe for your turbo? most people mods them into 3 inches in diameter and that alone gives them about 20hps becasue you can get more air into your intercooler.

I have a 3-in downpipe, shop that installed my engine suggested that i'd get it for better airflow, so i did.

I've just bought an MSD ignition kit and i'm going to install it this weekend.I've also heard about something called a torque converter, and how on certain vehcles, specialy turbocharged one, you can get a really good increase in torque and HP.Anybody know about these and how much they run for?

OOOOO, i also ordered a stage 2 ACT clutch, won't have it for two weeks, but when it comes i'm gonna be so happy. My clutch is crap, if i release it to fast a strange noise sounds.Mechanic told me it was going, so i ordered a new one.

Ummmm......... I believe that the downpipe deals with exhaust gases, not intake

Honestly, get a turbo xs mbc and add 3lbs of boost, I doubt your engine will ever know the difference, and I am more than sure the factury turbo can make 12 psi reliably. Just as an example, on my 300zx tt with intake and exhaust, every 3psi made 50 hp at the wheels. The turbo XS mbc is very high quality and very accurate. I know people pushing over 28 psi with them and having much better luck than with EBC's they used previously.
