Pinging even though it's timed right

Two weeks ago I had to replace the entire dizzy cause of a code 8. After we put the new one in and timed it correctly, I took the car for a test drive and the car just pinged like crazy. It is actually so noticable that people will actually look at me. I tried a higher octane but that didn't help. What should I be looking at doing here?

Re: Pinging even though it's timed right

I know you said the timing is right, but it sounds like the timing is advanced slightly - I dont know of anything else that would cause it to ping.

I'm having a similar problem my d15b1 started pinging shortly after an mpfi swap ive narrowed it down to one of two things. I think my fpr is shot so i might be running lean. Or something is wrong with my ecu because it wont go into base timing when i put a jumper wire in the connector. And according to my advance timing light (the kind with the dial on the back) i'm running like 5 or 6 degrees advanced way too low and the highest i can go is 10 then it will ping crazy loud and if i retard my timing it will bog. btw high octane fuel worked for a little while but isnt anymore. Also i burn a little oil so I dont know if that could also cause it to knock. Well sorry bout' the long post this may help or maybe i could get a little help.

Re: Pinging even though it's timed right

We checked with the timing light and it's right on the red dot on the crank pulley. I do know that I'm leaking oil into the spark plugs cause the seals are bad. Could that be the cause of it? Also my neighbor said he had a pinging problem and it turned out to be his catalytic convertor.

steve-o317, what is a fpr, I've never seen that term before?

Re: Pinging even though it's timed right

Did you disable the advance when you put the timing light on it?

Yeah, we made sure of it when we timed her.

thanks spoon for covering that question

Also I too tried disabling the advance but for some reason it wont work i did an mpfi swap and I've checked all the wiring 3 times and its all right. But when i put in a jumper to disable the advance it does nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if I have a bad ecu somehow? because I've checked the continuity all the way to the ecu and when i put in the jumper it has perfect continuity.

Wow Btw i didnt mean to steal the thread maybe i'll make my own about this someday if i cant fix it.

Re: Pinging even though it's timed right

Its not going to be in advance all the time, you wont notice a differnce when you jump it.

When was the last time you did a good tune up shag?

Re: Pinging even though it's timed right

Well, I've changed the seals and crap on it but nothing to major yet. Someone told me it's my catalytic convertor but I don't think it'd be that. I do believe it might be that my valves need to be adjusted correctly.
