98 jetta GLS Auto with 108k Cluster gets all screwy

Hi I have a 98 Jetta GLS and the Cluster just goes crazy. The speedo and tach just begin to chatter if you know what i mean and then the just drop out to 0. All the guages stop working and all the lights go on like when your starting the car. And the car starts to sputter and sometimes just bogs out and dies. It happens sometimes when i press on the gas and then the symptoms. Any Clue I saw that you guys and girls answer alot of the questions people ask. I really dont want to try and go on a wild goose chase but would like to isolate the cause and either fix or buy a new part. I thought it was eitehr a bad ECU or bad Cluster. Oh yeah the backlight lights stay on, on the cluster when I have my lights on if that helps any.
