Exclamation 2002 used elantra...only 37k but worn out brakes...... is it possible or ...??!!?

hi every1
i recently bought a used 02 elantra. the car is superb...no question about that...but when i took it for an inspection the inspector said i had to change the front rotors and brakes....i was shocked on hearing this...cuz the car only had like 37 k on it... from a single owner... i actually saw the reading on the micrometer and the reading was correct. has anyone else had this problem with the brakes getting worn out so fast like this/? even the rear brake drums were worn out!! i changed the front rotors and brakes though.

Brakes can wear out in 30k miles on any car if it's mostly city driving. Seeing that it only has 37k, and its 3 years old, it was either a bunch of city driving, or rarely driven. I see it all the time at our dealership where a car with 30k miles the brakes are worn out. But my wife has an 03 Sonata, had it just over 2 years, has 67k miles on it, with plenty of meat left on the front pads, but she also drives 50 miles each way to work every day, and it's 98% interstate. As far as the rear goes, the rears going out at 37k miles might be a little early. Only thing I can think of that would make the rear brakes go bad is if they weren't cleaned and adjusted regularly, and there was excessive rust buildup on the drums. Or they adjusted them too tight, thus causing them to wear quicker.

If you live in Maryland and buy a second hand car, the state requires you to get the inspection certificate. If you buy it from a dealer, the dealer usually takes care of it by using their own mechanics. If you buy it from a private party, you have to take it to an authorized inspection shop. The fee is ususally around $50. But these shops are there to make money. They will try to do everything to gripe your car so they can make money. They point out things need repairs to pass inspection. You don't have to fix it at their shop. Many small things you can do it yourself and save money, like replacing the license tag light bulbs or windshield wiper blades. For major repair what you can do is drive it to another place to get a second opinion. I cannot believe you had to replace the front rotors after 37K miles. I would borrow a micrometer from auto part store and measure it myself to believe it. My wife had 1985 Honda Accord. When we gave it away to my friend, it had 120K miles (all local driving). My friend took it to a local shop and got it passed for MD inspection without any part replacement. It had the original rotors. On my 01 Elentra, when I replaced the front pads I had 67K miles on it and the pads still had some meat to last at least 10K miles. My driving is 90% local (stop and go). Like I said... be aware of dishonest mechanics... shop around if you can, if possible get a second or third opinion before you commit to repair.

I have a 2002 also, I live in Southern California and do about 3/4 freeway driving and 1/4 city driving. Sometimes the freeway is more like city driving but in any case I have 47k miles on it and I just replaced the pads. Hope that helps in your gauging.
