Remove the venture from the intake hose. and cut the front out of your air box. This will allow the air to flow more freely less restriction more power better MPG

Re: better gas mileage?!?!?

Paul's got a good suggestion, and there are many others. Do a search in the xj forum on "intake" or "fuel" and you'll find a ton of discussion about it.

You can also go to www.go.jeep-xj.info for info on how to bore your throttle body, install a spacer, mod your exhaust.

You should also consider running some injector cleaner through and changing plugs and filters.

Re: better gas mileage?!?!?

Go to naxja.com/forum and do a search for "acetone" and you'll find an interesting discussion.

Keep her tuned and maintained. There are very few mods to increases MPG that will ever pay for them self.
Overbore TB, filters, spacers I have never seen any reliable independent testing of any of them that shows improvement in mileage. The people that make them always has proof that there gismo will get you 5 more miles per gallon. The test done by a lab (if any) I have never heard of before or ever again for that mater.
By the way the government will help pay for the testing of a "energy efferent device" if they even THINK it will work.
Also UL labs don't charge as much as you might think. For some things.
So why are we not seeing good labs singing the praises for the "MAGATRON 5000"?

Re: better gas mileage?!?!?

You never said what kind of mileage you're getting now.

My '88 gets somewhere around 17-18 mpg around town (when I don't lead foot it too much) and closer to 20 Highway. If I drive more aggressively around town, it drops to about 15mpg.

Re: better gas mileage?!?!?

Arctic,

I read that about the acetone, I think it's the main ingredient in 'cetane' booster for diesels. Sounds cool, any other info on someone who's actually tried it...?

I tried acetone in three consecutive tanks, after getting a baseline from the two previous tanks. No acetone, we got 13.53 mpg (to the US Gallon) With acetone the best it got was 13.23 mpg.

This was combined, 70% city and 30% freeway.

Re: better gas mileage?!?!?

That's interesting, it actually went down a bit...

So do we suppose that article on adding acetone to break down surface tension and get a better fuel spray was BS?

As I recall, in the 'study', there was an optimum amount of acetone to add, no more than 3oz per 10 gallons. After that, they claimed it could in fact hurt your mileage. So Rene, how much did you use?

I'm just curious, a few friends of mine were talking about trying this, none of whom were willing to burn up their engines as an experiment... If however, the results were like they claimed with an improvement of 15-25% (unlikely I admit), then everyone would want to add it.

Thanks for your response Rene!

A lot of thing come into play here, The gas (sunner/winter), injectors, general state of engine and at what speed/load, humidity .
There are a lot of thing you can add that will help MPG/power in a few cases. Many of them the big distiller have been playing with for years.
What they do use works well in everything from lawnmowers to airplains.
In the end try it and see if it works for you.

If you want better MPG, get another car! These Jeeps have big motors, the aero, of a block of cheese! EPA states 14-18ish, my new one got 14 and 18, my 1993 gets 14.5mpg.
