WIP: 2000 Peter Maxx "Extreme Build" LONG FIRST THREAD!!

Here is my Nascar entry for the 2005 NNL's . I am doing the last special paint scheme Dale SR ran at the Winston as it was still called in 2000. The peter Maxx multi colored scheme using JWTBM decals, Several products from MCG, Detailmaster, Scale model speedway, RB Motion, Modern motorsports and others. I have posted this at other forums but decided after I had started to show you guys the build.

On with the WIP.

Below in the 2 photos is the kicked out and opened up front end. I used the FAQ on the main page as reference to kick out the front, It is not kicked WAY out because they were pretty subtle in 2000. As you can see I have opened up the front upper and lower grill to accept the PE grills from the No BULL PE set of Model car garage. Also note I have added a PE chin spoiler from the same company. I threw some primer on the front to correct any imperfections.

Here are a few photos of the MCG grilles "Tacked" on.

Here is a good pic of the hood complete with sanded off hood pins drilled and ready for PE pieces. I also added Hood Tether plates from the No Bull set as well. The cowl flaps have been opened up along with the roof flaps. Not seen is the rear trunk which has been removed as well.

Again, model car garage pieces for the hood hinges were added from the No Bull sheet. The no bull sheet is a must for a Earnhardt build.

I also added a speedway window A pillar channel. I will sand it smooth and make it more intergated after the glue sets up. I will be leaving the Speedway window off when displaying the car so you can see the details inside more clearly. I will be adding new lower side skirting as well so the kit skirting has been removed.

Finally, I made beefed up the bracing under the hood with sheet plastic strips and added the underside MCG tether plates.

I have discussed the Under trunk detail with all of my nascar model buddies, and here is what I came up with. It is not exact, but definitely is an am improvement over a boring flat inner surface. I simply took masking tape, taped the underside of the trunk, and drew me the shape I wanted to represent the inner trunk ribbing. I then took that tape and tranferred it to a piece of thick sheet styrene. I cut it out, cleaned it up, and glued it to the inside trunk area. Added some bracing and came up with what I think looks pretty close!!

I also installed the MCG no bull spoiler. Basically you glue it on with these little tabs attatched to the under side of each SEPARATE spoiler piece. It says to bend them to a 90 degree angle. Then glue them on. I feel the best way to do thesae would be to put a groove in the trunk, HOWEVER, is the trunk is up like it will be on mine, that was not possible. I used superglue as a filler and came up with whqat you see below. It needs some smooth detail sanding, like the ends of the trunk especially but I like it....

The chassis is a unlknown territory for me in superdetail, I hope I can do all the mods as well my buddy Clay kemp does. CLay won best in show last year with his superdetailed Craftsman Hemi Supertruck, so he really knows detail on these things.

Below is the hacked up chassis and the state it is in... I have sanded the firewall smooth, integrated it and will begin "Bar Building" in the next chapter!! ;D At this point it looks weird without the drivers bars. I am going to integrate those to the body when I paint it.

Finally, the fuel cell. All scratch built with plastic sheet and square tubing. I glued the MCG fuel plate in place, Added small craft rod to all the mounting points of the cell to the chassis and added MCG washers to complete the bolt and washer fasteners. Note there are PE pull handles on either side of the cell as well. All from the no bull PE set. The entire cell was primed, then painted with Krylon "Fusion" semi gloss black.

Here is a nice shot again of the trunk hinged and propped up on the body.

Brakes are complete with the exception of the Calipers. I used MAS rotor and hat kit. They give you a nice template to space the studs evenly. The end of the rotor hats were coated with clear yellow based off of pics of one of Earnhardt's rides. The studs themselves are a D string off a guitar cut to length. That string seemed to fit the sizing I was looking for. Plus it is one of the Nickel wound strings, so it gives the impression of properly scaled threading. I then finished them off with MCG bolts on the hats where they attatch to the drilled rotors. I know he most likely would not have run drilled rotors at Charlotte, but I wanted to differ myself from Clay's rotors since he is using solid pieces.

Below is the entire body in primer. I used MCG no bull set roof rails to finish that portion off. I also removed the center cowl piece. That will attatch to my Air cleaner assembly and be displayed off the car, like the real one would detatch. In the pics I displayed the awesome cowl and roof flaps in bare PE metal along with the brakes. I will tackle these separate.

Next!!!! CHassis detailing!!!!

Following Mr Kemp's chassis pics and some of the 1:1 pics I have, I managed to build the entire front end bars and supports. This part of the chassis perplexed me. Therefore I was not looking forward to trying to do it. Neverthless, it is done. What a relief. Thanks CLay for your inspiration and reference!!!!!!

super work, is strained like it continues to go. A suggestion of me:
the edges of the wheel arches sharpen more thinly

Wow! Although we don't see many NASCAR models around here, I've got to say that this is one of the most detailed I've seen in a long time. Wow! Wow! Wow! I'm speechless!
