service & costs & reliability

hey, im looking to buy an x-type but where ill be going, there wont be a jaguar dealership for about 40 miles, maybe more.

I know a lot of you love your jags, but I'm pretty sure reliability will be a big issue. I wanna know what I would be in for, are the repair costs gonna kill me after the warranty is up? are the parts really rare?

Of course, any stories of reliability would be good. also, what about service experience during hte warranty? am i gonna have a huge headache because I cant get my jag to the dealership?

2005 models seem more reliable than previous ones, but have you checked out a 1995-1997 Jaguar XJ?

Re: service & costs & reliability

if you get the 2002 select edition......warrenty should cover you for about another 3 years and up to about 100,000 miles (i believe)

jaguar is usually good when it comes to service. thier oil changes are free (from about 2002 and up).....and you can take them to other dealerships for service.....as long as its jaguar.

i have yet to have any reliability issues with either one of my jags. so you should be in the clear. good luck with your decision.

Re: service & costs & reliability

yea, but i hear that a lot from 03 an 04 owners. 02 seems to be a troublesome year. Although it does sound like a lot of the reported issues are not major, except for transmission issues. I havent heard of a single engine failure. If anyone has anything else to say, please do!

Re: service & costs & reliability

I would say, do more research...
Find more Jag sites from owners...
Good luck/skill.

Re: service & costs & reliability

don't be afraid to do some work yourself either. the X-type isnt officially mine yet but i guess you could say it's betrothed to me lol.

so the lady who still owns it was having some issues with the brake lights not working and a dsc/ans system failure. the Jaguar dealer wanted around $1600 to fix everything. I replaced a brake light switch at the brake pedal, reset a few relays and pulled and replaced the fuses and voila it's all back to normal. total cost $40 for the fuse and a few hours of my time

this is basically a fancy upgraded AWD SVT Contour, not really a super difficult car to work on. It may not be a 72 Chevy truck but its not all that hard. And I am by no means an ASE mechanic
