Brake question

Hi

Has anyone had any luck bleeding or flushing out the brakes with a mity vac or some other vaccuum pump? If so how did you prevent air from leaking past the bleeder screw and the vaccuum hose? One last thing...when starting is all the old brake fluid in the master cylinder supposed to be siphoned out then refilled with fresh fluid or is just half of the old stuff just siphoned out to prevent air from getting in the master cylinder?

If you are using a vacuum bleeder system air shouldn't be able to enter the system. If you are having that problem then the tubing is not fitting properly on the bleeder screw. Secondly, if you let the master cylinder go dry you are in for a lot of work because you will then need to bleed the master cylinder and then you will need to bleed the brakes all over again.

I would simply start with the old fluid in the master cylinder and then start bleeding the brakes. Most of the vacuum bleeder systems come with an automatic master cylinder refill container that sits on top of the master cylinder to keep it full. As you bleed the brakes you should see all the old dark fluid come out and then the remainder of the fluid should be clean. Usually if done properly you can do this on the very first brake you bleed. Right rear!

Old school, get a screw clamp over the hose and tighten the hose onto the bleeder, you may have a bit of hassle getting your wrench on the bleeder screw to loosen and tighten as result, but with a bit of fussing it can be done.

One other thing to do is use a hose with I.D. just larger than the "nipple" of the bleeder valve, and use a clamp on that. The prob. occurs that the nipples aren't very long, and honestly, for the few bucks they cost, I'd get new ones with extended nipples.
