'98 2.2 having issues w/engine cooling
Car has set for over one month. when I started it coolant low level symbol was on so started adding h20. bubbles came out like it was filling up then a rumbling noise started coming from the overflow jug not sure what that means engine temp started getting higher than normal operating temp and the whole time fan never came on. coolant level symbol went off but still running to hot for itself and rumbling noise from overflow. maybe temp sensor went bad from sitting reason why fan not coming on but the noise is really weird never heard a noise like this before.

Typical cavalier crap. Do a search on overheating on this forum.

Re: Re: '98 2.2 having issues w/engine cooling
If your coolant temperature sensor is bad...it will not read correctly and usually will not go above 195. You said that your fan isn't turning on...so remove the fan and try to rotate the blades by hand...if you feel any grinding or hesitation in the movement the bearings are bad... next (if the bearings are O.K.) take two separate wires and wire the fan up to a 12v power source to check if the motor is good... If the motor is good your fan relay could be bad...in this case to save money I would wire it to a switch inside the cockpit. Next you should open the thermostat housing (do this when the engine is cold or you will regret it) to check if your thermostat is bad, and while you are doing so you can also check for any gunk or build up coming from your radiator. And if all else fails start removing the cooling system components one by one and troubleshooting them before buying any parts.
